If you’re reading this post, chances are you’re new here. Well, so am I. Welcome to the first post on Queer My Closet, a fashion-focused LGBT lifestyle blog. I’m Dana Shaw.
A Bit About Me
As you can read on my about page and sidebar, I’m a student by day, a blogger by night, and a lesbian all the time. I’m also a nonfiction writer, classical pianist, hardcore feminist, small-time world traveler, mental health advocate, and science fiction geek. Lots of things! I mention all of this because I’m fascinated by identities–the complex make-up of our characters, the small stuff that makes us us.
The Journey to Queer My Closet
I’ve long dreamed of starting a blog, but not until thinking up Queer My Closet did I imagine my blog would be so…well, queer. While researching blog topics, I noticed that there were few personal lifestyle blogs that brought an LGBT+ identity to the forefront. So, I figured it was up to me to start one.
Like so many people in the LGBT+ community, I tried to hide the gay part of my identity for years–don’t think about it, don’t bring it up, don’t do anything to make people wonder. But, as I became more comfortable with myself, I started to love how this one part of my identity influenced all the others. Being queer affects the clothes I wear, the books I read, the shows I watch, the way I look at the world. There’s no way I could write a lifestyle blog without highlighting this part of myself.
I came up with Queer My Closet one day after months of having a little style identity crisis. When I was fully out to myself, my closet full of floral skirts and flowy dresses stopped feeling like an authentic reflection of me. It wasn’t that I was hiding behind femininity, but rather that I wanted to start being perceived as more queer than I had been. But, I didn’t just want to fit myself into some tired gay stereotypes either (think flannel shirts, short hair, “sensible shoes,” etc.). Instead, I wanted to craft my own brand of queer…and document the process.
What To Expect
At Queer My Closet, you can look forward to finding:
- Weekly outfit photos, including recreations of different styles
- Hair and beauty tips and how-to’s
- Product reviews and book/movie/music recommendations
- Honest chats about tough topics
…and more! All of this comes with a focus on personal growth, self-love, and creativity. I hope to grow this blog into a community where people of all identities can work on becoming the best versions of themselves. Until then, I can only write from my own perspective, but I do hope you will share yours with me in the comments, on social media, or even over email.
Finally, I want to stress that Queer My Closet is a safe space where hate of any kind will not be tolerated. Everyone is welcome here, as long as we all respect and value each other. I can’t wait to get to know you all!
